What to Know When Your Pet Swallows a Foreign Object

6 December 2022

Pets are known for getting into things they are not supposed to. Whether they raid the trash can or chew on your favorite pair of shoes, they are always getting into something. Unfortunately, this can sometimes lead to them swallowing a foreign object. If your pet has swallowed something they should not have, do not panic. Instead, learn more about foreign objects and the steps to take if your furry friend swallows one.

What Are Common Foreign Objects Pets Swallow?

If you are a pet parent, be aware of the most common items that pets swallow so that you can keep an eye out for them. Some of the things on the list may surprise you. Items can include:

  • String, like objects such as ribbons or dental floss
  • Bones
  • Small toys
  • Food waste, like fruit pits and corn cobs
  • Paper
  • Fabric, like socks or pieces of rugs
  • Small items like batteries, rocks, or coins
  • Food wrappers

Some of these products are more dangerous than others and may need immediate medical attention.

What Symptoms Do Pets Exhibit After Swallowing Foreign Objects?

In most cases, the object will eventually pass through the animal's digestive system without causing harm. However, some instances occur where swallowed objects can cause serious health problems. Symptoms of a foreign body obstruction may include the following:

  • Vomiting
  • Excessive drooling
  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Painful abdomen
  • Difficulty defecating
  • Change in behavior

If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms, bring them to the vet as soon as possible. Foreign body obstructions can be life-threatening, so prompt treatment is essential. With prompt treatment and care, most pets will make a full recovery.

What Should You Do in This Situation?

You should be cautious about what you do. For instance, do not pull on a string when you see it dangling from your pet's mouth, as it may already be tangled in the stomach. Pulling it could cause more harm than good. Also, avoid inducing vomiting, as it could worsen the situation.

If your pet is choking, you may try to dislodge the object. Try the Heimlich maneuver by laying your pet on their back and applying pressure below the ribcage with your palm. Push inward and upward to dislodge the object. If you have a large dog, you can perform the maneuver while they are still standing.

In this case, put your arms around their belly and clasp them at the abdomen. Make a fist with one hand and push upward beneath the ribcage. Push firmly, then check their mouth to see whether the object is out. If your pet is not breathing after this, check for a pulse and start CPR as you contact your vet. However, even after successfully dislodging the object, take your pet to the vet for a checkup.

What Treatment Options Are Available?

The first step is to have your pet undergo an x-ray. The x-ray will determine the type and size of the object, as well as its location in the GI tract. If the object is small and non-toxic, your vet may monitor your pet for some time to see whether they will pass it out naturally.

If the object is large or sharp-edged, the vet may remove it via endoscopy or surgery. In any case, consult a qualified veterinarian to ensure that your pet receives the proper treatment.

If your pet swallows a foreign object, the best thing to do is contact your veterinarian right away. With prompt treatment, most pets make a full recovery. If you need professional pet medical care, contact us today. We are here for you whenever you need us.
